He grabbed a baseball bat and destroyed the doll when he realized that the intruder had gone into hiding in his closet. However, when he opened it, he was attacked by Amanda, who covered her face with a pig mask.

After a brief struggle, Adam eventually lost consciousness. Distressed and in tears, Amanda left the apartment and took Adam to a dilapidated bathroom in an underground tunnel network , where John Kramer's deadly game was waiting for him.

As she entered the room, John stood in front of a mirror and applied fake blood to his head, which made him look as if he had shot himself.

When he ordered Amanda to shackle Adam to a pipe in the back corner of the room by his left leg, Amanda removed his belt and shoes and fettered him with a metal brace.

She heaved him into a bathtub filled with water and threw the key to his chain onto his stomach. Meanwhile, John poured a bucket of fake blood on the floor in the middle of the room and injected himself with a medicament that slowed his heart rate and relaxed his muscles.

After finishing their preparations, Amanda took Adam's shoes and belt as well as the things they had used to set up the game and was about to leave.

John, however, stayed in the room and lay down in the puddle of blood with a tape recorder in one hand and a revolver in the other, which fully gave him the appearance of a suicide victim.

Then, Amanda turned off the light, left the room, and closed the heavy sliding door behind her. After the game ended, John left Adam to die in the bathroom as the latter had failed his test.

John and Amanda then went into hiding, but due to her feelings of guilt, Amanda had nightmares of Adam's ghost haunting her.

Therefore, she returned to the bathroom. When she arrived, Adam was severely weakened by a gunshot wound in his shoulder and the lack of food.

In an act of mercy, Amanda attempted to suffocate him with a plastic bag. Despite his weakened state, Adam desperately tried to fight her off.

However, he couldn't overcome Amanda. In his death throes, his head hit the toilet, which ultimately caused him to lose consciousness and die by asphyxiation.

Eventually, this only worsened Amanda's feelings, causing her to deal with her emotional stress by self-harming once again. Due to her unstable state of mind, John comforted her and tried to make her feel better, but soon realized that in this state, she could become dangerous for their mission and their test subjects.

Several months later, John targeted Eric Matthews, the corrupt detective who had framed Amanda for drug possession.

Therefore, he and his accomplices abducted Eric's son, Daniel Matthews , as well as six other people.

All of them were forced to play a game, which was directly connected to Eric's test. To accelerate their proceedings, John got Obi Tate to help them with the abduction of the other people, while he prepared the traps for each one of them.

After their abduction, they were brought to an old abandoned house directly connected to the underground tunnels leading to the bathroom where Adam and Gordon's game took place.

Detective Mark Hoffman , another one of John's accomplices, finally abducted Obi as well and took him to the same house as the other prisoners, making him the last test subject of the game.

All of them were unconscious and lay on the floor of a room with a large safe. Amanda was also among them, pretending to be a victim as well.

This way, she was able to observe the game and make sure that the prisoners followed the rules. She was also responsible for protecting Daniel Matthews, who was supposed to be used for his father's test later on.

John placed a tape recorder behind a brick wall and helped Hoffman to install a booby trap connected to the lock of the room's only door.

Having finished all of their preparations, John and Hoffman left the room and locked the door behind them. Saw II , Saw V.

Shortly afterward, the prisoners woke up and were immediately frightened by the situation. Jonas tried to wake up Amanda, who was the last one who was still unconscious, while Addison yelled that someone should open the door.

Xavier sarcastically commented that no one was listening, to which Laura responded that someone was and pointed at a camera.

However, Daniel, who squatted in a corner out of fear, said that those kinds of cameras didn't record sounds. The group's concerns grew worse when Gus suddenly started to panic.

He talked about a movie he had seen recently, revolving around a man who had been trapped in a room for nine years. Thereby, he frightened the others, especially Laura, even more, and caused a brief argument with Xavier.

They were quickly interrupted when Addison heard a ticking on the other side of the door. However, before they could find out what it was, Amanda suddenly woke up.

Playing her role as another victim, she immediately pretended to panic. She searched the room until she finally found the instruction tape along with a key and a written message, which warned them not to use the key to open any door in the room.

The tape told them they were all breathing in a deadly nerve gas since the moment they arrived in the house. While the doors would open after three hours, the gas would already kill them after two hours.

To survive, they had to find syringes containing the antidote, which were hidden in the house, with one of them being inside the safe.

Additionally, Jigsaw informed them that they all had a connection and told them that the clue to this connection was marked with an "X.

After listening to the tape, Xavier immediately grabbed the key. Amanda begged him to heed the warning. However, he refused to do so and tried to open the door.

Thereby, he triggered the booby trap and caused a revolver on the other side to shoot Gus Colyard right in the eye.

When Gus' blood splashed on her face and clothes, Laura started to scream. Xavier tried to calm her down, albeit unsuccessful.

While the other prisoners panicked, Jonas forced Amanda to tell him how she had known about the tape. She then told them about Jigsaw and his games and also revealed that she had survived one of his tests before.

As they now knew the dangerousness of their situation, the group searched the whole room. Daniel picked up Gus' jacket from the floor and used it to cover the latter's mutilated head.

Moments later, the door of the room finally opened. Jonas was shocked when he saw the trap which had killed Gus.

Amanda tried to remove the gun and take it with her but wasn't able to do so. Therefore, the group left the room behind. In the adjacent hallway, Xavier found a nail-studded baseball bat.

When he wanted to go further, Jonas voiced his doubts that there even was an antidote and tried to convince him and the others to make up a plan.

Xavier, however, was too impatient to listen and went on, followed by the rest of the group. Shortly afterward, Addison found a lamp that she took with her.

While making their way to the entrance hall, Jonas discovered a tattoo on Xavier's arm and asked him if it was from the Joliet Correctional Center, but Xavier wasn't interested in talking to him.

When they eventually reached the entrance hall, he tried to open the front door with the key from the first room and angrily threw it away when it didn't work.

However, Jonas took the key and put it in his jacket. Furious and angry, Xavier tried to smash the door with the baseball bat.

After this attempt failed as well, he got into a fight with Addison until Jonas intervened. Only moments later, Laura found a door that led them down to a boiler room.

Xavier took the lamp from Addison and slowly went down the stairs, followed by the others. Upon entering the basement, they found a mysterious hooded figure sitting at a table.

Xavier placed the lamp on the table and prepared to kill the stranger if they moved. However, when Jonas pulled back the hood, they realized it was merely a mannequin.

A small envelope with the name "OBI" written on it was attached to the puppet's chest with a knife. Xavier grabbed the knife and opened the envelope, which contained a mini-cassette.

When they played it, using the recorder from the starting room, it revealed to them that their fellow prisoner, Obi, had assisted Jigsaw in their abductions.

However, the tape also offered Obi a chance to redeem himself. To do so, he had to crawl into a large furnace in front of them.

Inside the oven, there were two syringes with the antidote waiting for him - one for him and one for another prisoner of his choice.

Upon this revelation, Laura recognized him as her abductor. The group and Obi engaged in an argument, during which Obi claimed that he had only done what he had to do.

Xavier threatened to kill him but was held back by Addison, who argued that Obi could get two antidotes for them.

However, Xavier continued to threaten him with the knife and asked him how to get out of the house. When Obi said he didn't know how to get out, Xavier slowly cut his throat to fear him but was interrupted when Daniel accidentally knocked down a large metal tub.

Barely frightened by Xavier, Obi eventually agreed to crawl into the furnace, reminding him that one syringe was for him.

However, when he grabbed the second syringe, the door of the oven was suddenly locked, and the furnace itself was activated.

As the flames came closer to him, Obi panicked and desperately tried to get out of the oven. When Jonas attempted to help him by opening the door, Addison yelled at him to cover his hands with his jacket.

However, he still couldn't open the door. Daniel eventually noticed a window on the other side of the furnace. When he tried to get him out, Jonas accidentally burned his hand.

Xavier then stepped in and smashed the window with his baseball bat, enabling Obi to crawl out. However, as Obi tried to do so, he got stuck and ultimately died in front of the others as the flames burned him alive.

When they realized that the syringes were burned as well, the remaining prisoners left the basement, while Amanda remarked that it was his own choice that had eventually killed Obi.

Shortly afterward, the group split up. While Jonas, Xavier, and Addison went upstairs, Amanda, Laura, and Daniel stayed on the ground floor to look for more of Jigsaw's clues as well as the antidote.

While searching the entrance hall, Daniel asked Amanda about the reason for her first test. Therefore, Amanda revealed to him that she was a drug addict and also harmed herself to deal with emotional stress.

She also told him that she was no addict before her time in prison and that she was framed by the detective, who investigated the case.

However, Amanda didn't tell him that it was Daniel's father, who had arrested her. When she was about to go upstairs, she was surprised by Jonas, who informed them that they had found a door which caught their suspicion due to being the only one without a lock.

When the group went upstairs, Addison tried to open the door but remarked that it was stuck. Xavier angrily shoved her away and attempted to open it by brute force, to which Amanda responded that the room was most likely a trap.

Therefore, Jonas pressed himself against the wall to cover himself in case she was right. Xavier sarcastically told her that the whole house was a trap and went on until he finally managed to open the door.

Thereby, a metal pin was pulled out of a timer connected to another door. Daniel told Laura to wait in the hallway and followed the rest of the group into the room.

An audiotape left for Xavier by Jigsaw informed him that there was another antidote behind the second door. However, it would be permanently locked if he didn't find the key in time.

Moments later, Daniel discovered a large hole , filled with thousands of used syringes, hidden under a bed.

According to Jigsaw, the key to the door was somewhere in the pit. After listening to the tape, Xavier demanded that one of the others had to jump into the hole.

When they refused, he grabbed Amanda, who immediately panicked. As the remaining members of the group were too afraid of Xavier, they stood back and watched how he ruthlessly threw her in the pit.

While the needles pierced her skin, Xavier angrily yelled at her to hurry. Frightened and in pain, Amanda rifled through the syringes until she eventually found one that had the key attached to it.

When she threw it out of the pit, Xavier grabbed it and tried to open the door, while Daniel helped Amanda to climb out of the hole.

Unfortunately, Xavier didn't manage to open the door in time and angrily tried to attack Amanda but was held back by Jonas.

Moments later, Laura entered the room as she had heard Amanda's screams. When Addison reminded the group to work together to find the connection between them, Laura admitted that she had been imprisoned once, just like the other members of the group.

However, she refused to reveal the reason for it when Jonas asked her. Afterward, Xavier left the room and finally separated from the group for good.

Shortly afterward, Amanda calmed down and stayed with the group to look for more of the antidote.

While she was searching the house along with Daniel, Addison, and Laura, the latter suddenly collapsed in a hallway, weakened by the gas.

When Amanda tried to comfort her, Addison told them they couldn't stay as they didn't have much time left.

Seconds later, Laura noticed a picture on the wall, which had large scratches on it that were shaped like an "X.

Upon investigating the picture, Addison found a photo attached to its backside, which showed Daniel and his father, Eric. Thereby, they realized that Daniel's father was the cop who arrested all of them by faking the evidence.

Following this revelation, Laura suffered from a seizure and died in Amanda's arms. Laura's death and the truth about their connection caused Addison and Amanda to leave Daniel.

As they went away, Xavier shouted for them and claimed he had found a way out. However, only moments later, Amanda entered the room where all of them initially woke up and found the corpse of Jonas, whose head had been smashed by Xavier with his bat.

Upon this discovery, she immediately returned to Daniel and told him they had to leave. Unfortunately, they crossed paths with Xavier, who told them not to run away.

Despite this, they tried to flee and ran back to the first room while Xavier pursued them. However, he stopped when he suddenly heard Addison screaming for help after she had walked into another trap.

As Daniel and Amanda heard her screams as well, Amanda burst out crying. Shortly afterward, Xavier took up his pursuit again and reached the room they were hiding in.

When he tried to break through the door, Amanda grabbed the nail-studded baseball bat, which still stuck in Jonas' skull, and used it to jam the door.

Due to the odd shape of the puddle of blood emerging from his smashed head, Amanda realized there was a hidden trapdoor on the floor.

With Daniel's help, she managed to push the heavy safe away and unlocked the trapdoor with the key found at the beginning of the game, which was still in Jonas' pocket at this point.

Only seconds after Daniel and Amanda went through the trapdoor and found the underground tunnels underneath the house, Xavier managed to open the door and continued to pursue them.

Full of fear, Amanda and Daniel ran away and followed the tunnels until they found another door. When they entered the room and turned on the lights, the room turned out to be the bathroom where Adam and Dr.

Gordon's test had taken place several months earlier. As there was no other way to escape, Daniel decided to sham being dead.

Just a few seconds later, Xavier entered the room. When Amanda told him that Daniel was gone, he responded that all he wanted from her were two numbers written on her and Daniel's necks, as those numbers were part of the combination to the safe, which contained one of the antidotes.

Amanda reminded him that he would still need her, as she was the only person left who could tell him about his own number.

However, instead of asking her for help, Xavier eventually cut off the skin from his neck with his knife, while Amanda watched in horror.

When he was done, he approached her but was killed by Daniel, who suddenly jumped up and sliced his throat with a hacksaw.

As Xavier died in front of them, Amanda started screaming. As she and Daniel were the only survivors left in the house, the time for the next part of her and John's plan had come.

Amanda subdued Daniel and injected him with the antidote from the safe. Afterward, she took his unconscious body with her and brought him to the Wilson Steel Plant , where John was already waiting for their arrival.

After taking Daniel to John's hideout, Amanda went back to the house where the game had taken place. Disguised in a black cloak and a pig mask, she returned to the bathroom and lay down in the empty bathtub.

Sometime later, Eric finally arrived at the house. As John had shown him video recordings of the game, which he thought to be a live broadcast, he assumed that the game was still going on and went in to find his son.

When Eric entered the bathroom and saw Amanda's lifeless body covered with the cloak, he initially believed her to be Daniel.

However, when he approached her, she took him by surprise and injected him with an anesthetic. Eric tried to shoot her but quickly lost consciousness due to the narcotic.

When Eric lay on the floor before her, Amanda took off her mask and shackled him to a pipe. Afterward, she took the magazine from his gun and disappeared, leaving only the empty gun, a flashlight, the hacksaw, and an audiotape in the room.

Once Eric woke up, he was disoriented at first, but eventually found the tape lying next to him.

When he started the tape, he realized that it was recorded by Amanda and that she had been an accomplice of Jigsaw all the time. She revealed to him that she was going to be John's successor once he died and that Eric was her first test subject.

Seconds later, Amanda returned. Eric angrily shouted at her and threw the tape after her, but she closed the door with the words " Game Over ," leaving Eric alone in the darkness.

However, even though the man who unjustly incriminated her was locked away and likely going to die, Amanda didn't feel relieved but instead suffered an emotional breakdown.

Screaming and crying, she stumbled through the tunnels but stopped when she heard Eric's voice behind her as he shouted for his son.

Surprised by his quick escape, Amanda started to panic as he came closer to her and hid behind some pipes. When she thought that the coast was clear, she carefully left her hiding spot but was beaten down with a metal rod by Eric, when she turned a corner.

Stunned by the blow, she tried to crawl away and fight off Eric, who bit the back of her knee and smashed her head against the wall several times while demanding to know where his son was.

When Amanda refused to answer and instead spat blood in his face, Eric grabbed his knife and threatened her.

However, she embraced her opportunity and brutally kicked his foot, which he had smashed and broken to get free from his shackle.

Overwhelmed by the pain, he fell to the floor, giving Amanda the chance to leave. As she was weaving towards the exit, Eric shouted after her, insulting her and telling her she was nothing compared to Jigsaw.

This caused Amanda to stop for a moment before she went back to take her revenge and kill Eric. Unbeknownst to her, Eric survived her attempted murder and was later nursed back to health by John's other accomplice, Mark Hoffman.

After the events in the house, Amanda's and John's identities were known to the public, forcing them to go into hiding. As she was now isolated from the world even more, Amanda's psychological dependence on John grew further until she was obsessed with him and his well-being.

However, she also started to doubt his methods, believing that his test subjects would never change even if they managed to survive their games.

Despite her continually worsening state of mind, John was reliant on her help as he wasn't able to carry on his work due to his cancer.

Therefore, Amanda set up the next games, but unlike him, she didn't give her test subjects any chance to survive. Her first victim was Troy , another patient of Jill Tuck's recovery clinic.

One night, Amanda abducted him and took him to an elementary school , where she prepared another game by placing her unconscious victim on a chair in the middle of a classroom and piercing several parts of his body with eleven metal chains.

Afterward, she placed a self-built nail bomb , which was connected to a timer, right in front of Troy before she left the room and welded the door shut.

Thereby, Amanda made it impossible for him to escape even if he managed to free himself from the chains. Ultimately, Troy was killed in the explosion of the nail bomb.

Later that night, Amanda invaded the apartment of Detective Allison Kerry and placed a camera inside her closet.

When Kerry came home after investigating the latest crime scene at the school, she rewatched the instruction tape from Troy's game, which was still intact despite the explosion.

While she watched the video over and over again, she suddenly saw herself on the TV screen. Realizing that she was filmed from inside her closet, Kerry shot right through its door.

When she searched the closet, she found the camera and removed it, but was then subdued by an invader with a pig mask, who had sneaked up on her.

Amanda Young and Detective Hoffman abducted her and placed her in one of Jigsaw's traps. When Kerry woke up again, she immediately realized what had happened to her and started to panic.

Moments later, a TV turned on in front of her. Jigsaw's ventriloquist puppet appeared on-screen and revealed to Kerry that she was abducted because of her obsession with her work.

It told her to grab the key to her trap from an acid-filled beaker hanging in front of her. Otherwise, the trap would kill her after 60 seconds by tearing her rib cage apart.

When the tape ended, and the TV turned off, Kerry further panicked and tried to tip the acid out of the beaker. However, this wasn't possible as it was held in place by two chains.

After some initial hesitation, she finally tried to get the key but pulled her hand back due to the massive amount of pain.

Nonetheless, she could bring herself to try it once again and eventually got the key from the glass, which she used to open the lock of her device.

Unfortunately, the lock was without function, destroying her remaining hope to survive. Mere seconds before the timer expired, Amanda entered the room.

Kerry recognized her and realized it was her who had manipulated Troy's trap as well as her own. Moments later, the timer went off, causing the trap to tear her rib cage apart.

As John's physical condition consistently worsened and brought him even closer to death, the time for his final tests had come.

Four days after the demise of Detective Kerry, John and his accomplices made the final arrangements for the last game, which was going to take place at the Gideon Meatpacking Plant , the first building John ever built during his career as an engineer.

To prepare the game, John's accomplices set up the necessary traps and clues inside the building and abducted the victims one by one.

When most of the work was done, Amanda brought John to his room when they came across Mark Hoffman, who prepared another trap called " The Rack " by John.

As he saw that Hoffman wasn't following his original construction plans for the trap, John criticized him, telling him to ask next time.

When Hoffman asked him how many next times there were going to be, John merely answered that their work would go on as long as necessary.

Hoffman then recklessly dumped Timothy Young , the trap's test subject, out of a wheelbarrow and was, therefore, berated by John for his brutal behavior.

John reminded him that Timothy was still a human being. When he asked Hoffman if he liked this kind of brutality, Hoffman responded that John wanted to see Timothy suffer just as much as he did.

This resulted in a short argument between Hoffman and Amanda, who asked him when he was going to be tested on his own. Hoffman responded that this was unnecessary as he claimed he had always appreciated his life, unlike her, and showed her the scars she had inflicted on herself.

Amanda mocked him, telling him he should get used to her as he wouldn't get rid of her anymore, to which he responded that she shouldn't be so sure about it.

When John interrupted them by saying it was time to go on, Amanda was about to take John to his room.

On their way, they came across Jill. John sent Amanda to go after Dr. Lynn Denlon , another test subject and renowned surgeon, and bring her to the plant.

Eager to fulfill his orders, Amanda left the building and went to the Angel of Mercy Hospital. Disguised with a pig mask, Amanda entered the hospital undetected and waited for Lynn Denlon.

When the doctor came back from the accident and emergency department and entered the changing room, Amanda followed her and locked the door.

When Lynn was about to leave and realized she was trapped, she tried to call for help with her mobile. However, before she could do so, Amanda subdued her and took her to the Gideon Plant.

Upon their arrival, she strapped her to a wheelchair and then left to go on some final errands for John. When Amanda eventually returned, she turned the surveillance monitors and the lights on, causing Lynn to wake up from her unconsciousness.

Realizing that she had been abducted, Lynn desperately screamed for help. Amanda calmly approached her and told her to be quiet, before she brought her to John, who was already waiting for them in his provisional sickroom.

When the women entered the room, John greeted his new subject and former doctor, even though she couldn't remember him and only recognized him from the news reports.

After a brief introduction, John told her that he had chosen her for a dangerous test due to her depression caused by the death of her son, Dylan , who died in a car accident three years earlier.

He went on and explained the rules for her game. David Tapp comments that Amanda was targeted by Jigsaw for that game because she was a drug addict.

At the end of the scene, she remarks that Jigsaw helped her. It is revealed in Saw II that Amanda started using heroin in jail.

She was sentenced to prison after being framed by Detective Eric Matthews for a crime she did not commit. She appears in most of the film as one of the subjects John traps in the Nerve Gas House along with several other people who Eric had framed, as well as the detective's son, Daniel.

As the last surviving female in the Nerve Gas House, it seems that her character is filling the role of a final girl of the film, yet this is a red herring.

In a twist ending it is revealed that Amanda is working with John, seeing him as a father figure and agreeing to become his apprentice.

Amanda claims that the test she experienced in the first film ultimately saved her life, and this is what caused her to join him.

She survives the nerve gas house, saved from the violent victim Xavier by Daniel, and upon the arrival of Eric Matthews she abducts him as her first "test subject" and rescues John from his custody.

Amanda expresses vengeful tendencies toward Eric as she tells him that the "tables have turned" and that she will make him experience what it is like to be imprisoned, as she traps him in a bathroom to rot.

At the end of the film Amanda claims that she intends to carry on John's work after he dies. Saw III specified that Amanda had been working with John since the first film, that she kidnapped one of the film's protagonists, Adam Stanheight , and that she had killed Adam out of guilt shortly after said film.

Flashbacks in Saw III also clarified that Eric had escaped from his trap, and engaged in a vicious fight with Amanda for the whereabouts of his son.

Amanda succeeded in defeating him, and left Eric for dead. By the third film, Amanda is depicted as ignoring John's modus operandi by creating inescapable traps that kill the subject regardless of whether or not they successfully complete their test.

She also displays tendencies of cutting herself under stress. The dying John decides to put Amanda through a test to see if she is still stable enough to carry on his work by having her work with Dr.

Lynn Denlon to keep him alive while she oversees the tests of Jeff Denlon. Amanda acts abusively toward Lynn, jealous of the attention John is giving her, even having a fight with her at one point.

At one point, she goes into another room to find an envelope that John told her about before his surgery; she finds a letter inside it which causes her even more distress, and, upon reading its contents, she breaks down and cries.

While John is being operated on, he becomes delirious and professes his love for his ex-wife , but which Amanda mistakes as an undeserved professed love for Lynn.

Amanda becomes angry and refuses to remove the shotgun collar from Lynn, which will kill her if John flatlines.

A heated argument about John's ethics and whether or not Lynn learned anything ensues, revealing that Amanda made her traps inescapable because she felt that the victims wouldn't have learned anything from the test they were put through, and ending with Amanda shooting Lynn in the abdomen just as Jeff walks in.

Jeff witnesses this and shoots Amanda in the neck. As she dies, a saddened John explains the nature of her test - Lynn and Jeff are in fact husband and wife — and expresses disappointment at her effectively defeating the point of his actions by giving her victims no chance to learn from their tests.

Darren Lynn Bousman fought to keep this scene in, but the producers removed it because they thought it would be better to leave the door open for Eric's return in Saw IV.

Leigh Whannell confirms on the Saw III DVD commentary that Amanda murdering Eric was the first time she killed out of spite and that it was this incident which caused her to stray from John's intentions.

The first was a flashback which showed Amanda meeting Adam in his apartment building prior to abducting him for Jigsaw's game.

Adam complimented Amanda's hair, gave her a flyer promoting a friend's concert, and flirtatiously took a photo of her.

The second deleted scene took place between Amanda and Lynn in which they engaged in a fight that resulted in cuts on Amanda's arms.

During Saw IV , Amanda's ability to pick up the much heavier Kerry's unconscious body is questioned by the FBI, leading them to believe another accomplice is helping John.

It is discovered that the events of Saw III and Saw IV occurred at the same time, revealing that Amanda was alive during the events of the fourth film.

Her blood-covered corpse is found by Agent Peter Strahm in the makeshift operating room just moments after her death.

It is later revealed that Detective Mark Hoffman , John's other apprentice, wrote the upsetting letter to Amanda in the previous film.

Amanda reappeared in Saw V , though only through flashbacks and voice appearances. On August 7, , Shawnee Smith confirmed in an interview with Bloody-Disgusting that she had heard she would indeed be featured in the fifth installment of Saw.

However, she claimed that she was never on set for the fifth film. Smith guessed that her reappearance will most likely be through the use of archive footage that had been previously filmed.

In the fifth film Mark Hoffman questioned, in a flashback, why Amanda would be needed to be involved in the nerve gas house trap from the second film.

Amanda is briefly seen in this flashback, lying unconscious on the ground as John and Hoffman set up that game. In another flashback, in the operating room seen in Saw III , Hoffman questioned John as to why he was letting emotional attachment get in the way of his perception of Amanda.

Hoffman also predicted that she would fail John. He then left the room through a secret exit shortly before Amanda entered the room with Lynn.

It was also shown that following Amanda's survival of her test in the first film, John also showed Amanda to Jill to prove that his method of rehabilitation was the only one that worked.

It is hinted that Amanda was a patient at Jill's clinic once and that Jill had given up on her. Amanda told Jill that John's method helped her.

It was shown that Amanda and Hoffman, although both apprentices to John, had a very competitive and tense rivalry with each other.

Amanda openly expressed doubt in Hoffman's abilities to set up the mechanics of their devices properly, remarking that she thought he was only useful for "heavy lifting".

Hoffman in turn openly expressed his dislike for her, saying he was the one who truly cherishes his life. Amanda also questioned whether Hoffman should be tested, reflecting upon the fact that she had already passed a test.

Amanda's close emotional attachment and care for John was also further displayed. Amanda appeared awkward and uncomfortable when she and John later ran into Jill as they exited the room.

In the letter, Hoffman told Amanda he would inform John of Amanda's indirect role in the incident. Feeling the pressure not to disappoint her mentor, Amanda complied with Hoffman's threats and shot Lynn.

This resulted in Amanda's failure to pass the final test John had set for her and thus her death. In the Director's Cut of Saw VI , one of the reinserted scenes presents a dialogue between Amanda and Cecil, in which she persuades him to rob the clinic by claiming, "I've been good to you.

Amanda appears in a quick flashback of the bathroom at the end of Saw 3D. Although Amanda does not appear in the eighth film, Jigsaw , it is revealed that John was assisted by Logan Nelson in preparing the "Reverse Bear Trap" for the game of which she survived in the first film.

The character of Amanda Young is also featured in the comic book, Saw: Rebirth , which is set prior to the events of the first movie.

It is revealed that while receiving treatment in hospital for his illness, John Kramer first notices Amanda.

She is portrayed as a fellow patient at the hospital who was being treated for an overdose that she had suffered, due to her drug addiction.

John expressed frustration that Amanda did not learn anything from her overdose. This motivates John to design her test which was featured in the first film.

In the short film she is being harassed by a news reporter who wants information on her experience when she was captured by Jigsaw.

In response, Amanda punches the reporter in the face and storms off. Amanda also appeared in the video game, Saw , as the first victim that protagonist David Tapp had to save.

Tapp rushes to save her and she proceeds to follow him around the asylum. However, she is soon abducted by Pighead , a minion wearing Jigsaw's robes, to cover up Amanda's identity as Jigsaw's apprentice.

Amanda is a playable character featured in the asymmetrical game Dead By Daylight as part of the downloadable Saw Chapter.

Several of the film crew behind the Saw film series have commented on the extent to which Amanda's character had been written to be one of the most important in the franchise.

Speaking about her character, actress Shawnee Smith said that while she was not able to completely identify Amanda Young with that of herself, she was however, able to perceive several of Amanda's characteristics to be admirable nevertheless.

Smith stated that: "When you first meet [Amanda], she's at the bottom, she can't go any lower and it's the combination of that and having nothing left to lose and finding someone to love and to sacrifice for.

Now that's rare and it takes strength, courage, practice, diligence, and a fearlessness to build that. Smith also stated that she attempted to find the human being in Amanda, and tried not to merely turn her into a "super killer".

Through interviews with Shawnee Smith, it was revealed that Amanda's evolution into the killer she was at the end of Saw III was in part due to a horrible childhood.

Smith stated on numerous occasions that Amanda was severely abused and neglected when she was a child. In the original script of Saw III , dialogue between John and Amanda made references to her past; in a scene she explains to John that "When I was a little girl, my father would lock me under the stairs.

I was terrified of the dark, and he would leave me in there alone. For hours. Because of her childhood, Amanda had never properly learned to deal with stress and emotional pain, and thus turned to self-harm as a way of dealing with her problems.

While in prison, her abusive tendencies were replaced with heroin use. However, after surviving the "Reverse Bear Trap", she no longer used heroin and returned to cutting, burning, and other forms of self-injury.

Her frail emotional state and somewhat mental instability made her quick to anger, and she would often act purely on impulse or emotion such as trying to kill Eric Matthews, and her emotionally and physically abusive behaviour towards Lynn Denlon.

A scene in Saw III explores Amanda's self-injuring tendencies, and shows her cutting the inside of her thigh.

The scene was not in the original script, and instead there was a brief scene in which Amanda is shown squeezing a razor blade which was later replaced by a scene of Amanda squeezing a leather cutter , only hinting at Amanda self-injuring.

Prior to filming, Smith had been reading A Bright Red Scream , a book that explains the reasons one would turn to self-injury.

It was Smith who insisted that a self-injury scene be filmed and put into the film, believing it was necessary to show Amanda's tendencies for character depth.
