Existenz' sense of humor lies beneath most scenes, and keeps expanding every time I see it: reality is absurd, and most of the game's bizarre plot lines seem like some sort of cosmic joke.

In , the whole notion of porting into another universe via a mutated flesh tentacle just sounds like a Rick and Morty episode. It's no longer a leap.

But there's something else that makes me come back to Existenz, and it's the celebration of immersion.

People gathered together, getting intimate, wanting an experience together. This is a feeling I've seen in immersive theater.

This feeling is in escape rooms. It's our struggle to transcend. And it's also about companies leaning into our need to transcend, and manipulating it.

I feel it in immersive theater , in VR , everywhere. Claire L. Evans, writer and lead singer of YACHT, recently tweeted that Existenz may be the truest Philip Dick movie adaptation ever made, even though it's not an adaptation of Dick at all.

But maybe in a way it is. Cronenberg has adapted so many other unfilmable authors: DeLillo, Burroughs, Ballard. It makes cosmic sense.

I still don't really know what Existenz is truly about. But I remember the last line. One I won't repeat now just in case you haven't seen it.

It lingers with me. Because, well, what is reality now? And are you feeling like you're able to escape from it? Be respectful, keep it civil and stay on topic.

Don't show this again. Geller surmises that Pikul's new bio-port must have been infected by Vinokur to destroy her game.

She inserts a disinfecting device into Pikul's bioport. Unexpectedly, Carlaw reappears as a Realist resistance fighter and escorts Geller and Pikul outside to witness the death of eXistenZ.

Before Carlaw can kill Geller, he is shot in the back by Vinokur, who is a double agent for Cortical Systematics. He informs Geller that he copied her game data while he was fixing her pod.

In revenge, she kills Vinokur. Pikul then reveals that he himself is a Realist sent to kill her. Geller tells Pikul she had known his intentions since he pointed the gun at her in the Chinese restaurant, and she remotely detonates the disinfecting device in his bioport, killing him.

Suddenly, Pikul and Geller are seated in chairs in a small abandoned church, seeing rows of pews as they come to, together with all of the other members of the cast, all wearing blue electronic virtual reality devices.

Nourish explains that the story was all part of a virtual reality game he designed called transCendenZ.

He tells his assistant Merle that he feels uneasy, because the anti-game plot elements may have originated from the thoughts of one of the testers.

Pikul and Geller approach Nourish and accuse him of distorting reality, before shooting him and Merle to death. As Pikul and Geller leave, they aim their guns at the person who played the Chinese waiter, who first pleads for his life, then asks if they are still in the game.

Pikul and Geller stand together in silence, not answering. The film's plot came about after Cronenberg conducted an interview with Salman Rushdie for Shift magazine in At the time, Rushdie was in hiding due to a Fatwa being put on his life by Muslim extremists due to his controversial book The Satanic Verses.

Rushdie's dilemma gave Cronenberg an idea of "a Fatwa against a virtual-reality game designer". Existenz was originally pitched to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , but they did not green-light the film due to its complex structure.

The site's summary stated of the film: "Gooey, slimy, grotesque fun. Roger Ebert gave the film three stars out of four in his review of the film, noting its release after fellow science-fiction film The Matrix.

He compared the two films, stating that while both have special effects, Cronenberg's film was stranger along with having his best effects involve "gooey, indescribable organic things".

Conversely, James Berardinelli gave the film a two out of four star rating in his review. He cites that the film had a "disjointed feel", and called it a "missed opportunity" that suffered from being released near The Matrix and Open Your Eyes , which he states did similar things that were accomplished better in those films.

Real is real until real becomes unreal, until unreal doesn't know whether it is or isn't. This is the next-gen.

By all means, eXistenZ is still a Cronenbergian film, but it has one central flaw. Or as we hip kids call it, video games.

Is this real life? Or is this just fantasy? Caught in a Cronenbergian landslide. No escape from reality. The Matrix came out the same year, and it handled virtual reality like an expert.

Sorry, Cronenberg. I love all your weird bodily special effects, your intricate sound design, and your slick direction, but your ideas did not translate well for this one.

It's been a while since a finale has turned my opinion of a film from the negative to the positive so quickly and completely, but with eXistenZ , Cronenberg manages to salvage most of the confusion and campiness of the preceding 80 minutes and actually makes it work, marginally.

Make no mistake - the rest of the movie is bizarre, sloppy, and really only worthwhile for the visual ingenuity of Cronenberg's obvious delight in practical effects and their implementation.

However silly the rest of it is - terrible accents, ludicrous scenarios even in the context of the film universe, and a seeming disregard for conventional narrative structure - I had to begrudgingly applaud Cronenberg for fooling me so completely.

Review by Adam Friedland 8. A botched assassination attempt on the life of Antenna's star game designer begins a dizzying descent into the VR multiverse.

Marketing trainee and gaming novice Ted Pikul finds himself entering into a virtual world so enveloping it leaves the gamer questioning the very nature of reality.

Where does the game world end and the real one begin? Is it subjective? Do we in fact construct our own realities in exactly the same way the game does?

Hooptober 5. In true Cronenberg fashion, this is your typical metaphysical mindfuck. Blurring the lines between psychosis and simulated reality, the characters in this movie are immersed in a virtual reality game called Existenz to the point that they no longer know what is real and what is not.

Instead, they find themselves lost in a set of Babushka doll like game worlds. Tellingly perhaps, The Matrix and The Thirteenth Floor were also released the same year, both of which delved into similar fare.

Virtual reality, phenomenology and metaphysics were definitely in the Gatorade that year even if Fassbinder beat them all to the punch decades prior with Man on a Wire.

Edit page. Pikul kills Gas, and the two escape to a former ski lodge used by Kiri Vinokur, Geller's mentor. Vinokur and his assistant repair the damaged pod and give Pikul a new bio-port.

Geller and Pikul enter the game, and meet with D'Arcy Nader, a video game shop owner, who provides them with new "micro pods".

They activate the new pods and enter a deeper layer of virtual reality. They assume new identities as workers in a game pod factory. Another worker in the factory, Yevgeny Nourish, claims to be their Realist contact.

At a Chinese restaurant near the factory, Nourish recommends that they order the special for lunch. Pikul eats the unappetizing special, and constructs a pistol out of the inedible parts.

In jest, he threatens Geller, then shoots the Chinese waiter. When the pair return to the game store, Hugo Carlaw informs them that Nourish is actually a double agent for Cortical Systematics, and the waiter Pikul murdered was the actual contact.

At the factory, they find a diseased pod. Geller connects it to her bio-port as part of a plan to infect the other pods and sabotage the factory.

When Geller quickly becomes ill, Pikul cuts the UmbyCord, but she begins to bleed to death. Nourish appears with a flamethrower and blasts the diseased pod, which bursts into deadly spores.

Geller and Pikul awaken back at the ski lodge, where they discover Geller's game pod is also diseased.

Geller surmises that Pikul's new bio-port must have been infected by Vinokur to destroy her game. She inserts a disinfecting device into Pikul's bioport.

Pikul and Geller approach Nourish and accuse him of distorting reality, before shooting him and Merle to death. It feels like a joke at times.

Is it a joke that it's aware of? Cronenberg films always have a distancing effect to me, an alienation. Existenz maximizes it. I left feeling uncertain: glad Cronenberg took on games and online presence, a bit frustrated by the outcome.

But it stuck with me. The Matrix has massive rows of bodies wired into a Terminator vision of robot domination.

Existenz has People play on shriveled pink "metaflesh" gamepods that vibrate and have twisted umbilical cords People's phones are glowing rubbery eggs.

There are guns made of bone and flesh. Game systems are made out of mutated frogs and salamanders grown in ponds.

It always felt a step ahead of The Matrix, because The Matrix falls into classic cyberpunk while Existenz leans into biopunk. OK, The Matrix had bioports on people's backs too But The Matrix is about leaving that behind, while Existenz leans into it as a freaky way forward.

Existenz has bone guns, and electronics factories that look like amphibian breeding tanks, and the game console is a breathing, pulsing At that time, few books or films explored what biopunk even meant.

Paul di Filippo's short story collection, Ribofunk , was one exception that I remember, and Rudy Rucker's Ware books explored some ideas.

An interview I did a long time ago with David Cronenberg, where he briefly commented on Existenz. The movie's undercurrent of politicized antigaming now reads like some twisted mix of Gamergate and societal rejection of social networks and screen addiction.

The battle over what constitutes reality takes place between evangelical factions. Meanwhile, the discussions of game developers and focus groups remind me of actual workshops I've attended.

There's realism in the absurdism.
